They may spend inordinate amounts of time on unpopular, obscure, or non-mainstream activities, which are generally either highly technical or relating to topics of fiction or fantasy, to the exclusion of more mainstream activities.

The internet has changed life for everyone, but the group that has been most impacted is the segment of humanity that answers to titles like “nerd” and “geek.” These words have had a long history of negative connotations, largely because they apply to people who have passions outside of the “mainstream.” 100 years ago an intense interest in fantasy and science fiction could leave you feeling very alienated. The internet allows people to find others out there who share common interests, no matter how obscure your interests may be.

This is powerful, and you can see its impact in the way that nerd culture has taken the world by storm.

This is the week that I decide to alienate more than half of my audience. However, geeks, like all other creatures, crave love, acceptance, intimacy and companionship.

It’s notoriously difficult to pull a geek outside of his comfort zone; the world hates and fears him, therefore why should he have anything to do with the world outside of the tiny slice that values him.
